Although dental sedation is not usually offered for regular dental cleanings or checkups, we may be able to offer it for patients who suffer from extreme anxiety.
Who benefits from sedation for dentistry?
If any of the following points apply to you, you could consider dental sedation:
- Phobia about dental procedures
- Small mouth that becomes painful during dental work
- Resistance to local anesthetic
- General anxiety disorder
- Negative experience(s) with previous dental work
- Unusually sensitive oral nerves
If you suffer from any of the above issues then dental sedation could help you to undergo the dental treatment that you need. With dental sedation patients can get through anything from root canals and tooth extractions, to dental implant procedures, with a minimum of stress.
That said, dental sedation is not typically offered for regular dental cleanings, x-rays, and other routine dental care. However, cases of extreme anxiety could be considered a viable reason for sedation during those procedures.
How do I know if dental sedation is right for me?
If you feel extremely anxious about the prospect of having dental work done, speak to your dentist. They will be able to advise you on whether dental sedation is right for you, and if so, what type would be most beneficial.
